Ever fancied eating in a restaurant designed around a cargo plane? Ordering a drink from the bar in the plane and then popping into the cockpit? When it comes to quirky restaurants I am a complete sucker. I love them. Costa Rica did not disappoint me. In Monteverde we ate in a tree house and in Manuel Antionio a cargo plane.
El Avion is situated on the side of the steep hill down to Manuel Antonio. If you aren’t staying nearby I would recommend getting the bus as the hill is steep and the pavement is intermittent. The C-123 Fairchild cargo plane has been converted into a bar with a restaurant around it. You can pop into the cockpit (which is easier before you have gone to the bar!) It also has the most amazing views and is perfect to watch the sunset. Little man was very happy pretending to pilot the plane!
The Fairchild C-123 was abandoned in Costa Rica after a scandal in the 1980’s. It was then purchased and moved to it’s current site in Manuel Antonio.
Even though it was low season the restaurant was always buzzing and busy. The food was good rather than great, and the prices were a little on the high side. Generally a meal in any of the tourist resorts in Costa Rica is not cheap though. I was pleased that they had a children’s menu (again not always the case in Costa Rica) and the boys enjoyed their hot dogs.
If you arrive early enough you can be seated with a view out to sea. One evening we sat and watched a rain storm. Luckily it didn’t reach us until we had got back to our apartment.
It is a great place to visit for a bite to eat if you are in Manuel Antonio and if you have children with you, they will love exploring.
