Ball Runs At Basildon Park National Trust

Basildon Park is a National Trust property in Pangbourne, Berkshire, and they currently have ball runs to keep the children entertained. As the boys are getting bigger, some of the National Trust properties are less appealing to them as they only have small toddler playgrounds. The best National Trust they have been to by far is Belton House in Lincolnshire. Whilst Basildon Park doesn’t even have a playground, they were more than happy to go as they have the ball runs set up for the summer. The idea is simple. A series of pipes dotted around the grounds that children can roll tennis balls round. Sometimes the simplest ideas really are the best!

You can bring your own tennis balls or you are able to purchase one from the entrance. The first ball run is located in the woods. There is also a throwing game where you stand on logs and throe your tennis ball into a log in the middle. The boys enjoyed both of these.

There are then another two ball runs in the grounds by the house.

The ball runs are a great way of getting the boys to go for an enjoyable walk. Whilst I am happy to walk along and look at the scenery, it is much nicer if they are occupied and not moaning and I am pleased to say that something as simple as a some guttering angles downhill can keep them amused for a family walk in beautiful surroundings.

  1. We took out National Trust membership a few years too late and really struggled to get our kids interested in coming with us. However as you say if you find the right places they are still a great family day out. I love the ball run and seeing how much fun your boys had I’m adding it to my list of something we could create at Coombe Mill.

Thank you for sharing a great idea and day out on ‘#CountryKdis

  2. Its always my dream to get an NT membership but its too pricey for us! This is really thinking about the kids isnt it? A nice touch to add to make the kids be more insterested in going and it does looks like fun!

  3. If you’re down here in Cornwall, I’d recommend Lanhydrock. They have a lovely playground and the kids absolutely love it. The Victorian country house is lovely and they also have a beautiful garden to explore. Love your photos, the kids look as if they are all having fun 🙂 #countrykids
