Basildon Park is a National Trust property in Pangbourne, Berkshire, and they currently have ball runs to keep the children entertained. As the boys are getting bigger, some of the National Trust properties are less appealing to them as they only have small toddler playgrounds. The best National Trust they have been to by far is Belton House in Lincolnshire. Whilst Basildon Park doesn’t even have a playground, they were more than happy to go as they have the ball runs set up for the summer. The idea is simple. A series of pipes dotted around the grounds that children can roll tennis balls round. Sometimes the simplest ideas really are the best!
You can bring your own tennis balls or you are able to purchase one from the entrance. The first ball run is located in the woods. There is also a throwing game where you stand on logs and throe your tennis ball into a log in the middle. The boys enjoyed both of these.
There are then another two ball runs in the grounds by the house.
The ball runs are a great way of getting the boys to go for an enjoyable walk. Whilst I am happy to walk along and look at the scenery, it is much nicer if they are occupied and not moaning and I am pleased to say that something as simple as a some guttering angles downhill can keep them amused for a family walk in beautiful surroundings.
