When planning a snow holiday, your mind might spring to skiing in the Alps. I have been on a number of ski holidays in France. Whilst they have been fantastic fun, the slopes have always been busy and I have returned home exhausted rather than refreshed. The concept of a slow snow holiday is something I find appealing. A trip that is away from the crowds, offering a wide range of winter activities in high quality family run hotels.
One country I am keen to revisit for a snow holiday is Norway. Pre-children my husband and I went to Hemesdal. Like in the US and Canada, the slopes were less crowded than the Alps. With a much shorter flight time than North America and no jet lag, it ticks more boxes on my holiday plan. Tuition was great and everyone could speak English. When it came to apres ski, the nightlife was as lively as you chose it to be. Personally after a day of skiing, I am happy to sit back and relax in a bar before heading to bed early.
We went to Norway to downhill ski, but it is also a fantastic place to try cross-country skiing. I am still undecided if this would be even more exhausting than downhill skiing. At least my husband wouldn’t get confused and make me go down a black run thinking it was an easy red!
Of course skiing is not for everyone. Norway can be enjoyed without strapping on skis. Seeing the Northern lights is on my bucket list. This can be combined with whale watching and a snowshoe hike. Imagine the wilderness of Arctic Norway and the natural dancing light show of the Aurora Borealis. Taking a dog sled or a snowmobile excursion across the crisp white snow. Making memories to cherish forever.
